About the Dorking Group of Artists
Originally formed in 1947, the Dorking Group of Artists has over 200
members. It is a thriving, non-profit making society whose members
enjoy practising their artistic skills, expertise and interests in the
company of friendly like minded companions.
The
Group meets weekly all year round for Summer and Winter programmes of
painting and tutorial sessions which include demonstrations, workshops
and critiques. These sessions are well attended resulting in good
creativity and good friendships.
Winter Programme
The Winter Programme is a well organised structured weekly programme of
activities aimed at bringing together members to not only paint
together in a friendly informal environment, but encourage the exchange
of ideas and inspiration. It is an opportunity for those less
experienced to get invaluable help from more experienced members or
appointed tutors. The programme includes a wide variety of topics and
activities and aims to suit everybody’s taste if not to encourage
members to try something new.
Summer Programme
The Summer Programme takes advantage of the better weather by giving
members a varied menu of outdoor venues in which to set up easels and
paint en plein air. This weekly meeting allows members to access some
unusual or beautiful locations that can only be arranged by special
permission. It also gives members the opportunity to paint together,
which is preferable in the more isolated locations.
Exhibitions
The DGA holds two exhibitions each year. The Annual Exhibition is held at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking and the Spring Exhibition
is held at Betchworth Village Hall. Both exhibitions are very well
attended and continue to be very successful due to the very high
standard of work on display. They give Exhibiting members an excellent
opportunity to show and sell their work and collectors a unique
opportunity to purchase recent original work by local artists at very
reasonable prices.
Membership
There are three types of membership: Full, Associate and Non-Exhibiting.
Many full members are established artists who regularly show their work
in galleries and other exhibitions, both here and abroad.
Dorking Group of Artists is a member of the Mole Valley Arts Forum,
which has been established to promote the interests of all forms of the
Arts within the Mole Valley. Our Annual Exhibition forms part of the
annual Arts Alive Festival in October which is supported by Mole Valley District Council.
